Why Your B&B Needs a Responsive Website

May 2, 2014

We’ve all been there before. We’re in the car. An idea pops in our head. We pull out our cell phone for a quick Google search. We get to the website we desire. But now, we discover that the website isn’t mobile friendly. Our next step is typically to get mildly frustrated and then continue our search for a different website that is user friendly. That response isn’t uncommon, as there is a 61 percent chance a mobile user will click another result if a site isn’t mobile friendly. Losing traffic means losing potential customers, which is just one reason that your bed and breakfast needs a responsive website.

What is a responsive website?

Let’s back up just a second and put a definition to “responsive website.” A responsive website is one that adapts to all screen sizes, regardless of what device is being used to view the website. In other words, the website will respond and appear the same way whether you are viewing it on your desktop, laptop, smart phone, or tablet. This will help create consistency and usability across the board, so your site will always perform optimally.

So what are some other reasons for a responsive website?

Just like when you have a guest stay at your bed and breakfast, you don’t want a guest who is visiting your website to have a negative experience. This is what happens in the example above if your site does not respond well to mobile devices, leading them to seek out your competitors and deprive you of bookings.

responsive websiteMaybe this wouldn’t have been a huge issue five years ago, but the amount of people using mobile devices for internet activity is rapidly increasing. Take a look at the graph to the right that represents one of our bed and breakfast partners. This graph is showing us three types of traffic: blue represents desktop, green represents mobile, and orange represents tablet.  In April 2014, we see that more than 42 percent of traffic occurred from smart phones and tablets, compared to just about 23 percent in April 2013. That’s a huge jump in just one year!

Additionally, more than half of social media consumption is happening on mobile devices. So when you are engaging your fans and followers on your social media platforms and directing them to your site with links, you’re website needs to be responsive in order to give them that positive experience.
